A former postman who was interdicted from duty in June after a number of undelivered mail, including several opened and sealed utility bills, Christmas cards and correspondence from the United States Embassy were found at his home in New Amsterdam, is now in more serious problems.
The man, Lawrence Lewis, called “G”, 27, of Timmer’s Dam, Angoy’s Avenue, and now a taxi driver has been charged with possession of ammunition without being the holder of a licence.
He appeared before Magistrate Shurdel Isaacs- Marcus on Wednesday at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s court on the charge. He pleaded guilty and was remanded to jail until Friday when he will be sentenced.
Lewis, who drives for a taxi service in the area, was taken into custody after a blank round of 7.62×51 mm ammunition was found on his bedroom ledge at his Angoy’s Avenue, home.
According to the prosecution, a report of assault was made against Lewis by his wife after he allegedly slapped her. When the ranks visited his premises he was in the yard and told investigators that he needed to change his clothes.
He was escorted to the bedroom where the round was found on a ledge. The rank took possession of the round and the man was told of the allegation, cautioned arrested and charged.
Lewis allegedly told investigators that he found the blank round about six to seven years ago when he went to a solider camp at Seweyo on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway.
He pleaded guilty to the charge, but was remanded to jail until Friday when he will be sentenced.
It is not the first time that Lewis has been in hot water for slapping his wife. In the previous incident the Police were called in after a report was made by a female of an alleged domestic problem at their home.
When the ranks visited the home they encountered the undelivered mails in the house. The Guyana Post Officer Corporation (GPOC) was informed of the development and began investigation.
