Dear Editor,
Government procurement, also called public tendering or public procurement, is the procurement of goods and services on behalf of a public authority, such as a government agency (Wikipedia definition).
To prevent fraud, waste, corruption or local protectionism, the law of most countries regulates government procurement more or less closely. It usually requires the procuring authority to issue public tenders if the value of the procurement exceeds a certain threshold (Wikipedia).
While I do not believe that there is a high level of corruption in Guyana as claimed by the Opposition, a Public Procurement Commission would build trust in public tendering for Government Contracts.
President Donald Ramotar and Leader of the Main Opposition are not going to be there forever. We need to leave better institutions in place than we inherited for the next generation.
This would be a great trust-building move that the PPP/C Government of President Donald Ramotar can embark on so that there are fewer complaints of corruption and greater transparency in the procurement process.
Communication is not just about talking. It is about listening as well.
