Dear Editor,
A number of residents have expressed to the Bartica United Youth Development Group (BUYDG) their disappointment with the Guyana Power and Light (GPL)’s power supply system, after hours and days of unscheduled outages.
A lot of business owners have complained about losses of food items due to the continuous blackouts.
The BUYDG told the resident that we believe that the reason why we are facing this dilemma is because the population in Bartica growing very fast and a lot of new homes and business places are being constructed over the years. I further said that GPL is not equipped with proper generators to supply Bartica with an adequate electricity supply.
Some GPL (Bartica Branch) employees told the BUYDG that the present generators being used to supply the community with electricity are very old, consume a lot of fuel and breakdown often.
GPL needs to purchase new generators, since the present generator is very expensive to maintain. Taxpayers’ money continues to be wasted due to the heavy fuel consumption and parts required for maintenance.
Sometime in last month, members of the BUYDG saw a few tracks in front and at the side of GPL loaded with used/old generators and other parts for the GPL power supply. The items were taken into the GPL building, and shortly after the members met with a worker of GPL and I asked him what the purpose for the old/used items was. He responded in a very displeasing manner and said and I quote, “they are to be used for the upgrading of GPL”.
The BUYDG will be proposing a meeting with the management of GPL to discuss mechanisms to be put in place that will seek to correct the present situation affecting the residents, business owners and GPL Bartica Branch, since the objective is to seek all avenues in developing Bartica, and to negotiate with the Government and the leaders of this region to provide a healthy and comfortable existence for the residents.
