The Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) and Yolo Entertainment is mulling a Super Seven Basketball Challenge, which is to be held at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) in October, according to a join release from the entities.
“The tournament will be open to all basketball players in Guyana and will include some special novelty rules which will make the game more entertaining,” the release said.
Yolo Entertainment, which Kirk ‘Chow Pow’ Jardine heads, said that the concept of the Super Sevens is designed to create an opportunity for players, who are not affiliated to any club and/or association, to experience game situations.
“These are players who would normally be playing “scrubby” games on various make-courts in and around the country just for fun and a ‘sweat”. This tournament will, I am sure, stimulate their interest in joining existing clubs or forming new ones,” the release noted.
The format of the game allows seven players per team with each team being allowed a maximum of three first division players. The duration of each game will be 20 minutes, and will see special rules being implemented for the competition.
According to the release, balls going out of bounds will result in a free shot to the opposing team and only three team fouls will be allowed during each half. Once a team is in the penalty any foul against them will result in three free-throws with the opposing team retaining possession of the ball.
The maximum of three personal fouls will be allowed to each player. A “differently” coloured ball will also be introduced into the game for the last three minutes of each half. Points scored with the “differently” colored ball will be doubled and attributed to the scoring team. Playing bibs will be provided for teams that register to participate in the tournament.
The release noted that GABA President, Michael Singh welcomed the introduction of the Super Sevens
Challenge; “We’re all cognizant of the excitement a game of basketball produces and this novelty format will definitely bring much more excitement,” the release observed.
According to the circular, the contest will be used as a precursor for National Championship that is slated to commence at the end of October.
