Essequibo recently lost one of her four centenarians. Charles Josephat Gardiner, a/k” Uncle Charlie”, formerly of Noitgedacht, Wakenaam, and Adventure, on the Essequibo Coast, died at a hospital in the City, after a brief illness.
Mr. Gardiner would have celebrated his 101st birth anniversary on October17. He was born in 1912 . His parents were James and Lucretia Gardiner.
Uncle Charlie, as he was commonly called was from the Island of Wakenaam. In an initial interview to observe his 100th birth anniversary, he said that during his adult years, he worked as an animal inspector with the police, at Essequibo, Leguan and Wakenaam . He was a farmer and also a laborer. He cut lumber to construct homes.
In 1996, Gardiner, who was at the time residing on Wakenaam relocated to the Essequibo Coast with his late wife, Virginia Seales. That union bore seven children. Three of those adult children are alive to date.
The late Charles Gardiner was an active member of the Airy-Hall Anglican Church.
Uncle Charlie was laid to rest on Monday.
