Coach Bailey satisfied with team’s preparation
Charismatic all rounder Christopher Barnwell has been named captain of the Demerara senior team for the up coming Guyana Cricket Board\ Pepsi 50 over inter county tournament.
Malteenoes off spinning all rounder Steven Jacobs will serve as his deputy.
The squad also includes Trevon Griffith, Robin Bacchus and Andrew Light Jnr, Paul Wintz, Kellon Carmichael and Zaheer Mohamed. The team will be coached by Orin Bailey and managed by Robert Adonis.
Bailey said he was satisfied with the squad and the preparations adding that 14-man squad and six standby players will be involved in a net session from 13:00hrs today before resting tomorrow before their opening round encounter against Essequibo at Bourda on Saturday.
The squad was selected after a simulation match at DCC yesterday and most of those involved showed promising form ahead of their first match, especially wicket keeper Derwin Christian who hit a blistering half century.
“We are the defending Champions and we beat Essequibo for the last few years. However we will not take them lightly since in limited overs cricket a bad day for a good team can cause an upset defeat for you. We have a quality team although (Ramnaresh) Sarwan is injured and (Shivnarine) Chanderpaul is unavailable,” Bailey informed.
“Most of the players have been around for a while and some of them have been exposed to the CPL tournament so I am confident of success on Saturday,” the former DCC and GDF all-rounder said.
Bailey said the focus today will be on chasing a target and was confident that
Skipper Chris Barnwell would lead from the front since he had IPL experience. He also expects a lot from Vice-Captain Jacobs who was a former West Indies under-19 Captain.
The Demerara 14-man squad: Christopher Barnwell (Captain), Steven Jacobs (Vice Captain), Trevon Griffith, Robin Bacchus, Andrew Light Jnr, Rajendra Chandrika, Shemroy Barrington, Derwin Christian, Zaheer Mohamed, Amir Khan, Andre Stoll, Paul Wintz, Kellon Carmichael and Shaquille Williams.
The standbys: Kemol Savory, Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Dennis Legay, Yetesh Dhanpaul, Seon Daniels and Raj Nannan. Coach: Orin Bailey, Manager: Robert Adonis.
