– old rivals Pele and Santos play to a draw
Host Fruta Conquerors through a second minute stoppage time goal from Dwayne Lawrence defeated arch rivals Camptown 1-0 when action in the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) Playoffs, to select three more teams to participate in the Guyana Football Federation premier League, continued on Sunday, at the Tucville Community Centre ground.
Alpha United and the Guyana Defence Force have gained automatic selection to represent the GFA in the League.
In a game that could best be described as lacklustre in nature, the speedy striker made good on the last possible opportunity that they had to inflict heartache for the Sunburst Camptown supporters after finding the back of the nets in the 92nd minute.
Lawrence, whose speed was a constant bother for the opposition backline all night, used his superior pace to reach on to a superb pass from winger Jomo Hinds, before weaving his way through a moment of magic to slip past his marker and punched the ball beneath the advancing goalkeeper Oswald Cornette much to the delight of the home fans.
Earlier, Conquerors squandered a wonderful chance to take the lead in the 30th minute when Lawrence was fouled in the penalty area resulting in a spot kick being awarded, but captain Jermaine Junior, who took the ensuing kick was denied by Cornette through a brilliant save, diving low to his left to keep the contest level at the break.
The visitors came out in the second period on the offensive and came close to taking the lead in the 65th minute through a fierce 35-yard right-foot shot from Leon Muir, but the goalkeeper was equal to the task, parrying the ball onto the upright and back into play.
In the preceding game, BK Western Tigers led by a second half brace off the boots of Hubert Pedro that was registered in the 62nd and 78th minutes defeated Riddim Squad 3-1.
Randolph Wagner had earlier opened the scoring for the victors when he netted in the 43rd minute of play.
On target for Riddim Squad was Amos Ramsay, who netted on the stroke of halftime.
In the opening encounter of the triple header card, old rivals Pele and Santos played to a nil-all stalemate.
Action continues tomorrow evening with a doubleheader at the same venue.
In the opening game, Fruta Conquerors square off against Santos, while Riddim Squad do battle with Camptown in the feature clash at 20:00hrs.
