A large contingent of Cuban-trained graduate doctors is beginning the final phase of their medical training. Over the next three days they will be undergoing part.
Approximately 180 new medical graduates were at the International Conference Center, Liliendaal yesterday, at the commencement of the programme.
The batch represented the fleet of medical students, who left Guyana seven years ago; to study at Cuban Universities.
The three-day programme will educate the new graduates on the functions of the local health care system as well as skill training in different types of health crisis management which includes Advance Labour Room Risk Management (ALARM).
Leslie Cadogan, Permanent Secretary, of the Ministry Of Health (MOH) congratulated the graduates on their accomplishments but advised that they stay focused, committed and serve in a professional manner throughout their career.
“You have embarked on a career path that requires that you are humble, polite and must conduct yourselves in a professional manner at all times, when relating to your coworkers and as you serve the public, your work must never be questionable.”
Cadogan encouraged the young doctors to continuously advance in their career.
He explained that the MOH is working to provide additional Post Graduate qualification programmes particularly for specialized medical careers.
The Health Ministry is currently exploring the possibility of having post graduate studies in the areas of gynecology, ophthalmology, and general surgery.
Minister of Health, Dr Bheri Ramsaran reemphasized the importance of continuous training in medicine.
He explained that approximately 10 per cent of the National Budget allotted to the Health sector has been used to provide better infrastructure at health institutions across the country.
“The administration had invested in the construction and revamping of several medical facilities…that is the construction of the hospitals at Diamond, Rosignol, Leonora, Suddie and Port Mourant.”
The Minister told the doctors that the health sector expects consistent, positive results from them. He expressed satisfaction in the performance of the medical batch, to date.
“You have proven that you are capable of conducting yourselves in a suitable manner thus far. We wish to see the same energy at the different levels of your employment in your capacity as medical doctors in the Health sector.
“We are glad to have this large batch of locals trained, in order that they can be employed at hospitals in various geographical locations …in hinterland areas and places like Leguan and Wakenaam that have the need for such skilled personnel.”
Minister Ramsaran reassured the gathering that their registration process is being conducted in a “legitimate fashion.”
“The Ministry of Health is currently conducting your registration exercise in quiet but legitimate manner in the same process that your predecessors would have passed through. The administration is doing all that needs to be done in a correct manner.”
Subsequent to the three-day training exercise, the doctors will be deployed to regional health facilities for institutional registration. They will undergo a period of internship for 12 months.
During this time, the graduates will endure a period of steadfast supervision by regional health management.
Dr Ramsaran warned the young professionals to take this stage of their employment “seriously” as success at the internship phase of their career will determine whether they acquire advance registration and certification.
