FIFA Development Officer Howard McIntosh, who is in Guyana for first hand interactions with the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Executive and various stakeholders, yesterday visited the athletics track being constructed at Leonora, which also houses a football pitch.
FIFA’s Howard McIntosh (2nd right) takes a photo of the football pitch at Leonora, while other officials including GFF’s Christopher Matthias (left), and Deputy PS Steve Ninvalle share a light moment.
Deputy Permanent Secretary Steve Ninvalle along with GFF President Christopher Matthias and other officials took McIntosh on the visit to see the facility. It was reported that the FIFA official expressed pleasure at the football pitch being set at the facility, which will house Guyana’s only synthetic track at the moment.
The facility is expected to be of international standard when completed, paving the way for international and other top notch matches to be staged at Leonora to give the country another world class venue to host matches apart from the Providence Stadium.
McIntosh during his visit here met with Minister of Sport Dr. Frank Anthony and Permanent Secretary within the Ministry Alfred King where he held discussions on the sport’s further development, how the Government could assist and what if any assistance FIFA could offer for a project that is to be undertaken at the National Stadium.
He had rated Guyana’s performance on the GOAL Project very poor and the GFF must improve its standing or Guyana stand to lose out on the FIFA assistance for a proper football facility belonging to the federation.
