Presidential Secretariat, Dr. Roger Luncheon, says that Guyana and Suriname have both signaled their strong support for the establishment of a land linkage across the Corentyne River.
Dr. Luncheon was at the time responding to a question about government’s progress with their intention to build a bridge to link the two countries.
According to Luncheon, a considerable amount of work has been undertaken and completed in terms of site selection, the feasibility, the technology and the specifications which are going to be used. Luncheon also said that works have been done to determine what kind of bridge will be established.
Luncheon went on to explain that the funding for the construction and the operation for the bridge has been a collaborative exercise and the international financial institutions.
He said that those discussions are continuing so that they could arrive at a specific approach that would see funding, made available. Further he disclosed that they have completed the preliminary studies feasibility studies.
“We must be aware that the work which has been done has brought us to a point where we have to seriously consider the technology, the feasibility and equally important the financing to bridge the two Guianas” Luncheon posited.
In April, President Donald Ramotar had told the private sector in Berbice about major infrastructural projects, including that of the Corentyne River Bridge, which should link Guyana and Suriname.
Last February, during a one-day visit by President Ramotar to Paramaribo, he and his Surinamese counterpart, Desi Bouterse, discussed the massive project.
Guyana and Suriname were expected to approach the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) for financing the project.
The two heads of state reiterated the importance of the construction of the bridge across the Corentyne River. It would considerably enhance trade and economic relations as well as cultural exchanges between the peoples of the two countries, they said.
They decided on a joint approach to the IDB for the purpose of identifying modalities for financing.
