– Josiah-Tanner avenges 2012 loss to Morgan
By Edison Jefford
As he has done so many times before, Guyana’s undisputed distance-running champ, Cleveland Forde, continued his well-scripted dominance yesterday when he cruised to a comfortable 10km Road Race win in the Neal and Massy Group of Companies event.
The various prize winners from the Neal and Massy 10km Road Race yesterday pose for a photo moment at the company’s Ruimveldt Headquarters following the presentation.
Forde successfully defended his title in a time of 33:16 seconds ahead of Cleveland Thomas and Dennis Horatio who placed second and third in 33:45 and 34:05 respectively. Winston Missenger finished fourth in 34:18 with Nathaniel Giddings (34:34) fifth. Lionel D’Andrade fell outside the top five finishers in the race.
In the Women’s race, United States of America-based, Euleen Josiah-Tanner avenged her 2012 loss to Alika Morgan with a win yesterday. Josiah-Tanner registered 39:21 seconds ahead of the talented Jevina Straker, who out-sprinted Morgan for second place.
Straker ran 40:51, while Morgan had 40:52 in an epic finish yesterday morning. Guyana Defence Force duo, Ashanti Scott and Carlissa Atkinson finished in fourth and fifth in times of 45:12 and 47:19 seconds to seal the top five among the women.
The 10km Road Race was initially scheduled to start at 6am outside GBTI at Diamond, however after a few delays, officials opted to start the event at the GuyOil Gas Station at Diamond, where Thomas, Giddings and D’Andrade jumped out with an early pace.
Horatio with Forde slightly behind trailed the trio through the two kilometre mark. Forde stalked the pacemakers for the next six kilometres with the lead and trail packs changing compositions at intervals. Thomas and Giddings became the front men midway through the race with Horatio and Missenger battling to keep up with Forde, who was upping the ante.
Soon it was Thomas, Giddings and Forde, who would separate themselves from everyone in the race around Providence. The trio battled up to Eccles before Forde stepped on the gas and left the struggling Giddings, who faded, and Thomas in his wake.
Forde’s next competitor became the clock, but unfortunately the official electronic timepiece had its own issues as it malfunctioned. Arguably, Guyana’s most successful distance-running athlete, Forde cruised to yet another comfortable win, literally on his own watch.
Carl McKenzie (37:14) won the Junior Boys’ category ahead of Grivon Grant, Kevin Nicholas, Samuel Kaitan and Joshua McKenzie, who had times of 37:32, 37:35, 37:55, and 46:40 seconds respectively.
Andrea Foster (43:59) won the Girls’ Junior category. Foster defeated Cassie Kirton (45:43) and Adama Roberts (46:56) for the top spot. Shantel Hinds and Toshawna Doris finished fourth and fifth in 59:34 and 1:02.60 respectively.
Alisha Fortune won the Women’s Master race in 51:23 ahead of Cyrleen Phillips and acclaimed tri-athlete, wife of motor racing ace, Kevin Jeffrey, Denise Jeffrey who finished second and third respectively in 52:33 and 55:30 seconds.
Ian Archibald took the Masters Men 45-55 age group ahead of Linden Harrison (42:42 seconds) and Orin Josiah (47:43) respectively. Llewellyn Gardener won the Master’s Men 55 and above category after registering 42:49 ahead of Ravi Purohit and Maurice Fagundes who had 47:48 and 48:54 in that order.
