-3k Fitness Walk/Jog starts at Demerara Harbour Bridge
Some of Guyana’s top distance athletes will storm an East Bank Demerara 10km route from 6am this morning for the fourth Neal and Massy Group 10km Road Race, which starts outside GBTI Bank at Diamond and concludes at the company’s Ruimveldt headquarters while the 3km Fitness Walk/Jog is expected to start at the Demerara Harbour Bridge.
Guyana’s most decorated and senior national distance runner, Cleveland Forde will be looking to defend his title against an impressive field that includes, Cleveland Thomas, Nathaniel Giddings, Dennis Horatio and Lionel D’Andrade, who is in Guyana from Trinidad and Tobago to compete in the Ainlim race today and Courts 10km race next Sunday.
Forde, who has been at the helm of local and regional distance running for some time, is heavily favoured to win the Men’s overall title. He is the defending champion and has a field that’s well known to him since he has competed with them over the years.
Forde is a multiple IAAF South American 10k winner and CARICOM 10k champion; there’s no doubt that Forde’s will be pulling all stops to continue his dominance; the big question today has to be who will challenge Forde for his coveted Ainlim 10k crown? The names mentioned earlier has their work cut out to change what has become a norm for Forde.
The Women’s Open race presents more competitive battles if United States of America-based, Euleen Josiah-Tanner is in Guyana to compete against Alika Morgan in a rivalry that dates back as far as 2010. The two athletes have shared the spoils over the years. However, up to press time, Kaieteur Sport could not confirm Josiah-Tanner’s participation.
Morgan is the defending champion with Ashanti Scott also registered. Jevina Straker and Adama Roberts also lead the top registrants. In a Neal and Massy press release late last week, the Group Chief Executive Officer, Deo Persaud, said the athletic race and walk have been organised in an effort to promote health and wellness in Guyana.
According to Persaud, the race is special since it coincides with the Group’s 45th Anniversary of operations
in Guyana. Persaud encouraged runners, joggers, walkers and members of the public, who normally exercise to participate in today’s activities.
Employees from the Group of Companies, which comprises AINLIM, CCS, Demerara Oxygen Company (DOCOL), Geddes Grant, Marketing and Distribution (M&D), NM Services Limited and NM Security Solutions will also compete for top honours as part of their internal rivalry.
