Bandits in a car escaped with some $1M in raw gold after holding up the occupants of a truck near the Soesdyke junction at around 17:00 hrs yesterday.
Police sources said that the occupants of the truck had come from Linden with goods and had reached the Soesdyke Junction, near the East Bank Demerara Public Road, when a car blocked their path. Four men then emerged, held the driver and another man at gunpoint and relieved them of about $1M in raw gold.
The robbers then drove off in the direction of Georgetown.
A senior police source said that two men are being questioned.
The attack came at a time when there appears to be a resurgence of robberies and other serious crimes.
