All is set for the final segment of the Berbice Table Tennis Sub Association (BTTSA) team tournament set for today at The Port Mourant Training Centre with play in one semifinal, the third place play off and the final beginning at 11:00 hrs.
The tournament, which was slated to be a one day tournament, was so well supported that it has spilled over to two days. Last Sunday saw eight teams taking part in the tournament which has the blessing of the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA).
Four of the teams were from New Amsterdam, while the other four were from Corriverton with the teams being made up of two and three players each and were divided into two groups, with the winner and runner up of each group advancing to clash in the semifinals.
The two groups were- Group one, New Amsterdam “A”, New Amsterdam “B”, Corriverton “C” and Corriverton “D”
Group two were Corriverton “A’, Corriverton “B”, New Amsterdam “C” and New Amsterdam “D”.
The day’s action will serve off with the second semifinal between New Amsterdam “A” and New Amsterdam “C”, with the winner advancing to play with Corriverton “A in the final, while the loser with take on New Amsterdam “B” for third place. The first semifinal has already been completed with Corriverton “A” beating New Amsterdam “B” 3-0.
The tournament is being used as a yard stick for the second annual Berbice Open tournament which is expected to be bigger and better this year. The Berbice Open, which is sponsored by overseas based Guyanese, Berbician Souvenir Ranmdyal, a 2009 Hall of Fame Realtor of Queens NY, will be held over two days this year with a number of overseas based Guyanese expected to return to participate.
President and general Secretary of the GTTA, Godfrey Munroe and Linden Johnson, were both present and are expected to be on hand today to assist with the coordination of the tournament. They both commended the BTTSA for doing a commendable job. (Samuel Whyte)
