Former National Hockey player Stephen Fernandes, who considers himself a cross over athlete, upstaged a star studded field for his debut win in the feature School Boys and Invitational 25-lap contest when the 15th annual DeSinco Trading/Degree sponsored 11-Race Cycle Meet came off at the National Park.
Once a potent right midfield player, Fernandes got it right after many attempts to be the first rider crossing the finish line in One Hour 24 Minutes 17.31 Seconds, relegating last year’s winner Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams to the second place.
Closing out the top six places were Raymond ‘Steely’ Newton, Chris Persaud, Neil Reece and Alonso Ambrose in that order.
Fernandes, an unattached rider, made his move with ten laps to go having been in the company of Williams, McKay, Ambrose and both Persaud’s, Chris and Robin.
Conditions while cool were very windy and this took its toll on the riders with the eventual timing of the race so reflecting. Twenty-one riders faced starter’s orders. Commenting on his maiden National Park feature race win, Fernandes noted that he does it for fun and enjoys the company of his new found friends in the cycling arena.
Topping the field in the juvenile 10-lap event was Ray Rawle in 26 Minutes 35.70 Seconds, Andrew Hicks and Cleveland King followed in that order.
Representatives of DeSinco Trading led by Marketing Manager Sarah Savory assisted with the presentation of prizes; all the competitors were presented with Degree deodorants apart from their trophies and cash incentives.
