The Universal DVD Young Warriors Cricket Club of East Canje, with a base in Cumberland, East Canje, has extended congratulations to their bright and upcoming cricketing star in Shimron Hetmyer.
In a release, the club stated, that the president and members of the Universal DVD Young Warriors Cricket Club congratulates 16 year old opening batsman Shimron Hetmyer of Canefield East Canje on being selected on the West Indies U19 cricket team that has been chosen to challenge their counterparts from Bangladesh a number of matches later this month in Guyana.
According to Secretary/Treasurer of the club, Anil Beharry, Shimron is an exceptional talent, and with proper focus and guidance, he is sure will soon make the West Indies senior team. He stated that the classy young opener’s talent was spotted from the tender age of six and has been improving since then. According to Beharry the club will like to advise Shimron to keep his feet grounded, for many good cricketers coming out from the area failed to reach the highest level because of getting too big to fast for the game.
In the release, Beharry said that despite the challenges faced by the club, they continue to produce good cricketers and is one of the top clubs in Berbice.
Beharry also took the opportunity to call on parents in the Canje area in particular to send their young kids to the club to play the game. He like other officials is upset by the many youngsters that are left to the mercy of gang leaders and drug traffickers which are prevalent in the entire Canje area.
The club hopes that Shimon’s success will rub off on other youths in the area and young players in the club especially and at the same time motivate parents to supervise the kids and make sure they are involved in productive activities and to join the club.
The club continues to strive to provide a good facility for its cricketers and plead with citizens in the area to assist in caring it.
Hetmyer, apart from cricket, is also a talented footballer, athlete and basketball player.
