– event set to attract best distance athletes in Guyana
Epic distance-running battles and the corresponding production of outstanding distance athletes have been one of the established characteristics of local athletics time immemorial, which is one reason, furniture and appliance giants, Courts, has invested in this genre.
Courts Guyana Inc. understood their role of providing an environment for the most successful genre of local track and field when they announced, three years ago, the return of the Courts 10km Road Race Classic. The race promised to continue some great battles in distance-running and three years on it has accomplished that goal.
The keen rivalries, and more importantly, the cash incentives that rank second to only the IAAF South American 10km Road Race Classic, are expected to attract the crème de le crème of local athletes next Sunday outside the Courts Main Street Branch.
With the efforts of Courts’ Management, including its marketing team, to make the Courts 10km Road Race a unique spectacle on the local athletics calendar, one can only anticipate the fiercest rivalries with the stakes exaggerated beyond just bragging rights.
The race will have five categories, namely Junior (age 16-19); seniors (Men 20-34) and (Women 20-39); Masters (Women 35 and over); Masters (Men 40-54) and Masters (Men 56 and over); all categories will attract cash prizes and trophies.
Banks DIH under its Powerade and Aqua Mist brands are also partnering with Courts for the race that will doll out $100,000 each to the open male and female winners. Second place will pocket a sum of $80,000; third $60,000; fourth $40,000 and fifth $20,000 for fifth place.
The top junior male and female athletes will win $60,000 while second, third, fourth and fifth get $40,000, $30,000, $20,000 and $10,000 respectively. The Masters women 35 and above and men 40-54 earn prize monies of $60,000, $40,000 and $25,000 for first to third while the Masters men 56 and above will pocket $40,000, $25,000 and $15,000 for first through third.
Trophies will accompany all the cash prizes. To add some excitement to the event, Courts will be awarding the First Place Courts Finisher in the 3km Run $20,000 for their efforts. The 3k Run or Jog novelty event is also open to anyone who wishes to participate.
The 3km is a health run and participation from a wide cross-section of society is encouraged and registration for this aspect of the event is free. Registration for the 10k Road Run and 3k Run/Jog is ongoing at Courts Main Street Office and Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) Headquarters.
The Guyana Police Force will be controlling the route of the race while First Aid will be on hand to ensure a smooth and incident-free event. Banks DIH Limited has partnered with the race under its Tropical Mist Water and Powerade brands. (Edison Jefford)
