Weeks of planning and fine tuning climaxes tonight with four basketball teams engaged in furious rivalry when the curtains go up on the Annual Linden Amateur Basketball Association (LABA) Trophy Stall Open League Basketball championship at the Mackenzie Sports Club, Hard Court, tonight.
Despite all of the planning, organisers would have been hard pressed to commence activities but for the corporate intervention of proprietor of Trophy Stall, Ramesh Sunich, who unhesitatingly acquiesced to a handsome package to offset the expenses associated with the tournament.
To this effect, the organisers made their way to the new branch of Trophy Stall, 241 South Road and Bourda Street, where a representative of the sponsor, Alexis Barrington, handed over the gift.
Secretary of the LABA, Joseph Chapman and Organising Secretary, Ashton Angel (Jr.) received the gift and expressed deep gratitude to their benefactor. “Trophy Stall has always been receptive to our requests and it is through the benevolence of Mr. Sunich that basketball fans could enjoy the sport in Linden even as the players receive an opportunity to develop,” exhorted the LABA Secretary.
His sentiments were echoed by Mr. Angel who further urged the public to support the businessman so that he could continue with such benevolence. Mr. Sunich wished the organisers well and admitted that he felt obliged to render support which in effect was his way of reciprocating the support received from the Guyanese society.
In all, eight clubs will be participating including Kashif and Shanghai Kings, Amelia’s Ward Jets, Half Mile Bulls, Retrieve Raiders, Victory Valley Royals, Wismar Pistons, Block 22 Flames and Bankers Trust Falcons.
Meanwhile, the action gets underway tonight at 19:30hrs when Kashif and Shanghai Kings oppose Block 22 Flames while Victory Valley Royals take on Wismar Pistons. Activities continue tomorrow night with Retrieve Raiders playing Half Mile Bulls followed by Bankers Trust Falcons coming up against Amelia’s Ward Jets.
Prizes will be awarded to the Most Valuable Player and the Best Defensive Player while the teams finishing first and second will receive replicas.
