Representatives of telecommunication company, Digicel, has once again signaled to Amerindian Affairs Ministry the company’s interest in sponsoring this year’s sporting activities held in commemoration of Amerindian Heritage Month.
This was done during a simple ceremony, yesterday, at the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, where Digicel’s Public Relations Manager handed over a cheque marking $1M to the Minister of Amerindian Affairs,

The ceremony was attended by the Amerindian Affairs Permanent Secretary, Nigel Dharamlall; Advisor to the Minister, Yvonne Pearson; the Ministry’s Sports Coordinator Egbert Mayers and Digicel’s Marketing Manager, Gavin Hope.
This year’s sponsorship marks eight years of the company’s support to Heritage Month activities since its establishment. She said that the support comes as a result of the recognition of the need to preserve Amerindian Heritage.
The Minister, in accepting the offer of sponsorship, expressed their appreciation for the promotion and support of sports has been receiving over the years from Digicel. She also made reference to the company’s support to Amerindians in the area of its corporate mandate, which is to expand the telecommunication barrier.
She said that as a result of Digicel’s cellular network reaching hinterland communities, villagers are now being given an open window outside of the interior.
Due to circumstances, Ministry officials were forced to shift the venue of the sporting events from the GDF Ground to the Everest Cricket Ground, Carifesta Avenue.
Apart from this slight change however, preparations for the sporting events, to be held on September 21 and September 22, appear to be moving in the right direction.
According to the Sports Coordinator, the prizes and trophies for the high achievers have already been acquired. He said that among the games, much focus will be placed on football and track and field; while other games of cricket and volleyball, will be played.
