Fresh off his outstanding debut performance in Jamaica where he competed in the Caribbean Motor Racing Championship (CMRC), local Group 2B champion Afraz Allie continued his solid showing with another impressive display, during last Sunday’s Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club ‘Race of Champions’ Meet, at the South Dakota Circuit.
Allie, who drives a Toyota Starlet, scorched the field en route to three victories from as many starts to emphasise his dominance in the division and boost his confidence ahead of the final leg of the CMRC
which will be staged in front of home fans on November 24.
The local champion showed his mental fortitude and ability even after having to endure a disappointing qualifying session the previous day which saw his Starlet front right wheel break clean out after cutting all its studs.
According to him, it was a clear demonstration of the amount of horsepower the car possesses, but it also affected his chances of making a qualifying time that forced him to start on grid 5 on race day.
“The problem was rectified late Saturday night after lots of help from Tulshi Machine shop (Ronald Machine shop – Industry) and we worked until after 23:00 hrs the said night to get it right for racing the following and even though we decided not to do anymore testing due to problems with the throttle body we were still able to get everything rectified in time for race day and as you know from the results we were succesful,” Allie said.
Allie’s performance was of such that even though he started the race from Grid 5 by the time the cars approached the end of the opening lap he was already in front of the opposition and remained there until the race finished, a position he maintained for the next two races.
Exuding confidence, Allie said the encouraging results is just a preview of what is in store for November since the team plans to do some more modifications in time for the foreign invasion.
“We used this Meet as a warm up for what’s to come and I can say that there are many upgrades yet to be done so the crowd is in for a real treat come November.”
Allie currently lies third in the CMRC in the Group 2B category.
