“As Leader of the Alliance For Change, in the interest of working for unity, harmony and consensual political leadership in our beloved nation, I hereby call on the ruling Party, the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), to desist from its divisive, acrimonious and strife-ridden public pronouncements it persists in recently about the leadership of the AFC.”
Alliance For Change (AFC) Party Leader Khemraj Ramjattan, speaking at a press conference yesterday at Sidewalk Cafe, Middle Street, said that it is with consternation and utter dismay that the ruling Party issues grossly irresponsible statements, thus fuelling a national atmosphere of distrust, disharmony and lack of consensual political leadership.
“This sort of public behaviour only serves to widen the divisions and discord that stifled our development for so many decades, and continues to do so,” Ramjattan said.
“I, like my fellow leaders in the AFC, until we assume the role of Government, or attain high public office, remain private citizens. In pursuit of our livelihoods we will be guided by our own moral standards and the dictates of our professions, not by the cheap posturing of a corrupt government…Those of us in the AFC who serve as Members of Parliament uphold every tenet of Parliamentary ethic and Code of Conduct.
“This surely cannot be said of a number of PPP/C Parliamentarians. We serve in the political arena purely out of our deep sense of justice, good conscience and desire to contribute our skills and resources to the development of our nation.”
The recent Code of Conduct that the AFC drafted and released to the public is a matter entirely born out of our sense of decency and moral and ethical public behaviour, Ramjattan said the party simply chose to do the decent thing.
“As to the choice of our Party’s members to be involved in projects, associations, companies or private partnerships, and so on, this is entirely up to our Party members’ individual discretion, within the parameters of the Party’s founding principles and ethical guidelines and its recent Code of Conduct. We are here to serve, not to plunder,” Ramjattan declared.
“The AFC exists to bring a new political discourse, leadership culture, national conversation and a spirit of cooperation, consensus and harmony to our nation. We recognize the immense difficulty of taking this stand to inculcate a new political culture in this country, especially given the ruling Party’s tradition of divisive politics, whether same be subtle or deliberate, going back a long time.”
Urging that the leaders of the PPP/C should breathe new life into their political discourse by extending and embracing cooperation, harmony and consensus all across this country, Ramjattan said everyone must think about the future of the country, and work hard to see that the next generation escapes from the nasty political climate.
“We must bring a new level of refinement, nobility, common sense and goodwill to prevail in the words we utter to the ears of the Guyanese people. Our citizens expect us to lift this nation to higher levels, and it starts with how we talk to each other, how we shape the public space with the language we employ in our discourse.”
