Sep 11, 2013 Letters
Dear Editor,
I was surprised to see in the Sept 10, 2013 issue of KN a second letter from Mr Urling which referred directly to me, even as you continue to refuse to carry my letter on his interview referring to my work as not being professional and to a comment that he interprets as a suggestion that the entire investment in Amaila (US$157mn.) should be undertaken by the Guyana indigenous/private sector.
In his second letter, Mr Urling does not repeat his claim that my comments, as opposed to his, were not ‘professional’ but purports to be surprised at the tone of my letter which was published by another paper to which it was sent when it became clear to me that KN had no intention of publishing it.
He also repeats the silly suggestion that the private sector cannot invest in large sectors such as Amaila. As far as I am aware the very sector he chose to cite as the ultimate proof of this, namely petroleum, has, by way of CGX attracted local investment.
This brings me to the point of this note. If I wish Mr Urling to interpret my comments I would ask him myself. In fact he is a most inappropriate interpreter in the circumstances. It cannot be either fair or principled, therefore, for the editor of a paper to allow only one protagonist in a debate to air his views and to interpret the views of another.
I apparently aim to be afforded no right of reply in the face of either an attack on my professionalism or on the facts. It is this very attitude which had for years led to the noticeable absence of reasoned contributions to the discussion and letter pages of most local papers.
I had expected better of KN although after the malicious Maxwell /Kissoon episode in connection with the Standing Orders of the Assembly and advice I am supposed to have received from Ms Teixeira, I ought to have known better.
Carl B. Greenidge
Editor’s note: The letter that came to me appeared to be incomplete and a far cry from what was published in Stabroek News.
Until then, we have published every missive that Mr Greenidge would send to the newspaper. It is unfortunate that he would arrive at the conclusion that this newspaper would only allow one protagonist to “air his views and to interpret the views of another.”
