Executives of the Lawn Tennis fraternity continue to work assiduously towards the development of the sport even as they plan programmes that provide much needed activity for their charges. They have recently staged the 3rd edition of the Diamond Tennis Club (DTC) Summer Camp at the Guyana Bank of Trade and Industry (GBTI) Courts in that community and have now organised a junior Lawn Tennis tournament at the Non Pariel Racquet Club, Woolford Avenue, scheduled for September 14 -29 next.
Despite the most ardent plans, those executives would have been
unable to stage the tournament successfully devoid of adequate funding and to this effect, furniture giants Courts Guyana Ltd has acquiesced to a sponsorship package and yesterday morning the principals of the Organising Committee trooped to that entity’s Main Street office to receive a cheque to the tune of $300,000.
Courts PRO, Kester Abrams was joined by his colleague, Marketing Manager, Pernell Cummings and handed over the ‘gift to President of the Guyana Tennis Association (GTA), Ramesh Seebarran, in the company of First Vice President (GTA), Grace McCalman.
Delivering brief remarks, Mr. Abrams disclosed that Courts celebrates its 20th Anniversary in September and executives were proud of their input into the development of sports during those years. “Lawn Tennis is a developing sport locally and Courts is pleased to be a part of its growth and development,” exhorted Mr. Abrams. He further noted that it is the most lucrative discipline internationally. Mr. Cummings also lauded the organisers saying that the benefits will be transcended to the youths and as such, his organization was extremely delighted to support the event.
Both principals of the GTA expressed gratitude to their benefactors while assuring those officials that the donation would serve its purpose of enhancing the skill of the tennis players. The tournament will be played over the next three weekends at the Non Pariel Racquet Club, Woolford Avenue and the respective winners will receive lucrative prizes.
