Camptown Football Club with support from Ansa McAl under its Stag Beer Brand launched the inaugural Troy Cook Memorial football tournament yesterday, with the beverage giants underscoring its unswerving support for the development of local sports.
Ansa McAl’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Darshanie Yussuf stated that event’s such as these highlights the company’s commitment to sports on a national level, noting that they will continue to help develop sports and communities in the process.
Stag Brand Representative, John Maikoo, reiterated his brand’s association with football, adding that the company is elated to be the sponsors of yet another football programme, which is aimed at continuing to proliferate the development of the sport.
“The Stag Brand is pleased to be associated with football again. It’s our first
competition within the Georgetown Football Association (GFA), and we have the cream of the crop amongst eight teams. Stag wants to promote football, let the best team win,” Maikoo said.
Founder of the Campbellville-based club, Rudy Bishop, believes that Camptown is a community team and a hub of sporting activities. “This tournament will give us the opportunity to resuscitate and recapture that glory,” Bishop noted during his address.
“The aim is to move from strength to strength and try to expand the tournament every year. Good luck to the team that will win it for the first time. Hopefully it will be Camptown,” added Bishop, who was open with his support for his football club in the contest.
Event Coordinator, Richard Mittelholzer thanked Stag for their initial support and informed that the coordinators intend for the tournament to be sustained for a lifetime. He said that with Stag in the midst in a major way, he believes the competition is in good hands.
The tournament that will be contested over four playing dates will feature eight teams competing under a knockout format. The eight teams are Alpha United, BK Western Tigers, Camptown FC, Fruta Conquerors FC, Georgetown Football Club (GFC), Guyana Defence Force (GDF), Pele FC and Santos FC.
Riddim Squad has been named as an alternate team in the event that any of the aforementioned sides are unable to participate. The victorious side will receive $500,000, while second and third place finishers will pocket $200,000 and $100,000 with trophies respectively.
The official random draw of the tournament was done at yesterday’s launch. Fruta Conquerors is expected to oppose GFC in the opening encounter at 6pm on Friday, while Santos will battle Pele in the feature game at 8pm at Camptown Ground. The remaining fixtures include Alpha United battling GDF and tournament hosts, Camptown locking horns with Western Tigers on Sunday at the Camptown venue, which will host all matches.
Patrons, who are attired in the colours of their respective teams when they are competing, will be given a reduced entrance fee to all games. (Edison Jefford)
