Swimmers quietly confident of holding their own – Coach Baksh
By Franklin Wilson
Guyana is set to participate in seven (7) of seventeen (17) disciplines at the inaugural South American Youth Games slated for Lima, Peru later this month attracting athletes in the age range, 14 -17.
The Guyana Olympic Association (GOA), which will be in charge of all the athletes and officials numbering 30 persons, met with them and the parents of the athletes on Thursday last at Olympic House to brief them on what is expected of them as ambassadors of their country.
Swimming Coach, Sean Baksh sharing information on the preparations of the swimmers, noted that so far it’s been going well, “They’ve been training really hard conscious that they are coming up against the best athletes in their age group in South America.”
The swimmers are Hannibal Gaskin, who will compete in the 50m and 100m free, 50m and 100m butterfly; Onika George, who will be aiming for supremacy in the 50m and 100m Free, 50m and 100m backstroke; Omar Adams who will seek glory in the 50m, 100m and 200m free as well as the 50m butterfly.
Cuban Coach Isabel Cousa Fals, who along with Baksh, were also in charge of Guyana’s swimmers to the recently concluded Goodwill swimming Championships in Barbados has been assisting Baksh with the preparations of the team for Peru.
“The swimmers are optimistic and confident that they will do well against their peers from the other countries. They’ve been focused and working hard, we’ve been putting in ten sessions each week but we are presently tapering that down.”
Baksh also stated that they have been holding a number of classroom sessions centered on getting the athletes psychologically prepared and ready for the challenges ahead.
“We’ve also been doing some land conditioning to get them in tip top shape and that’s been going well too; but we are now in the fine tuning stages.”
Both Gaskin and Adams were part of the Goodwill team with Gaskin claiming bronze in the 200free.
We will give a good account of ourselves – Table Tennis Coach, Johnson
Both Shemar Britton and Chelsea Edghill. who will compete in the Individual events and the “Multinational” Mixed Doubles will give a good account of themselves according to Table Tennis Coach, Linden Johnson.
The experienced Johnson informed that the two players were overseas are now back in their homeland and training session will resume at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall tomorrow (Monday) up until the time of departure for Peru which will be Tuesday September 17, 2013.
Britton and Edghill were participating in training camps in the USA, Britton returned yesterday.
“We will be focusing on the mental aspect a lot, as you know both players have been very active in the past couple of weeks so they are up there in terms of match practice.”
The talented players, Johnson notes, are not far away from their peers in the South American bloc, they are separated by just a few points and with that in mind, they can do very well.
Edghill recently competed at the Senior Caribbean Championships in St. Lucia where she won Gold in the women’s double teaming up with Trenace Lowe, Silver in the 21 years and under category and Silver in the team event.
Much will be expected from these junior athletes.
