Having destroyed all in his path in Killen, Texas last year to win the World Masters 74kg M2 Overall gold medal as well as gold in the Squat (255.0kg) and Deadlift, which is also a World Record (272.0kg), Winston ‘Little Master’ Stoby is focused on defending his titles at this year’s championships set for the Hyatt Regency Hotel – Orlando International Airport, Orlando, Florida, September 23 – 30, 2013.
Speaking with this newspapers, the soft spoken Stoby said that he is confident that he will be able to repeat and even better last year’s performance; training has been ongoing since July, four days per week under the watchful eyes of Trainer/Coach Randolph ‘The Accomplisher’ Morgan.
Stoby is aiming to also win gold in the bench press having taken bronze last year to make a clean sweep of the category.
“Training has been going well under the guidance of Randolph Morgan and this move was necessary to get the extra edge with Morgan being experienced and is also one to push you to the limits in preparations and that’s what I need now.”
Stoby’s accomplishments as one of Guyana’s most decorated powerlifters is well documented, he has medaled at every level and despite being an M2 athlete now, has been proving that age is truly just a number.
In order to get to Florida, Stoby is tasked with the responsibility of raising $325,000 Guyana dollars and disclosed that with the assistance of the President of the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPF) Peter Green, they will be approaching some corporate entities for support.
Just recently, Guyana got their first Under-18 Sub-Junior World Champion in the 53kg class when Gumendra Shewdas took the overall gold at the World Juniors & Sub-Juniors Men’s Championships held in Killeen, Texas, USA, following in the footsteps of Stoby.
The Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport, which had sponsored Shewdas to attend, also held a luncheon in his honour where most of the other national athletes, Shewdas’ parents and members of the GAPF executive attended.
