Christopher Barnwell’s X1 defeated Steven Jacobs’ X1 by 49 runs in the final Demerara Senior Cricket trial at Bourda yesterday despite a 175-run opening partnership between Shemroy Barrington and Robin Bacchus in a match to select the Demerara team for the Pepsi inter-county 50-over tournament, scheduled to commence on September 21.
Barnwell led the way for his team with 72, while Andrew Lyght Jnr (40)
added 110 with Trevon Griffith (67) for the first wicket as Barnwell’s X1 amassed 320 in 50 overs to which Jacobs’ X1 responded with 271-5 when their overs expired.
Barnwell, who played in the last IPL in India, thumped seven fours and three sixes in his pugnacious 28-ball innings, while the left-handed Griffith clobbered five fours and three sixes from 74 balls after Griffith and Lyght had set a solid foundation for their team.
Lyght, the son of former West Indies ‘B’ opener Andrew Lyght, hit two fours from 47 balls as Yatesh Dhanpaul took 4-30 from his seven overs for Barnwell’s X1.
Bacchus continued his fine form from the Guyana/ Trinidad and Tobago T20 at the Stadium last week with another commanding innings yesterday. The left-handed GCC player stroked seven fours and three sixes while Barrington’s accomplished 88 was decorated with five fours and a six.
Griffith took 2-39 and leg-spinner Steven Sankar 2-57 as their team finished on the winning side. The Demerara team is expected to be named shortly and could be
captained by Barnwell or Jacobs. (Sean Devers)
