Kenard Jubar, a driver attached to the Office of the President, was yesterday remanded to prison after he was brought before Magistrate Priya Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to answer to the charge of illegal possession of firearm and ammunition.
The court heard that on September 3 at John Street, Brickdam, Georgetown, the defendant who resides at 27 Norton Street, Georgetown, had in his possession, four live rounds and one 9mm Pistol without being the holder of a valid licence.
The accused pleaded not guilty.
Police Prosecutor Bharat Mangru objected to bail as he told the court that the defendant was found with the said firearm and ammunition on his person.
Mangru said that on the day in question, police were on mobile patrol when they noticed the defendant riding a motorcycle (CG 8212) without a helmet. He was subsequently stopped and a search was conducted where the discovery was then made. Jubar was then arrested and after investigations were carried out, the charge then was instituted.
To strengthen his reasons for objecting to bail, the prosecutor added that the offence is one that is prevalent and is also serious when the nature of the crime is taken into consideration. More importantly, he said, “no special reasons were presented to the court to justify the defendant’s request for bail.”
Chief Magistrate Beharry refused bail.
The defendant then informed the court that he was unsure as to why his lawyer, Kim Kyte-John, was unable to appear in his defence. His matter was transferred to the court of Magistrate Judy Latchman where he was told to return on September 18 for the commencement of his trial. Witnesses were also ordered to be summoned for the said date.
An orange cloth was then placed over Jubar’s face by a worried relative before he was taken to the holding cell.
