Dear Editor,
I have noticed with much interest the current situation involving Simona Broomes, the current head of the Guyana Women Miners Organisation.
It is no secret that Ms. Broomes has been recognized for her work by the US, regarding her role in rescuing victims of human trafficking.
It is now known that she has been accused of stealing a gold chain during one of her exercises, by someone alleged of being a human trafficker. Sometime had elapsed after the exercise led by Ms. Broomes. She has been detained, in a high profile manner, with the matter in the public domain now.
The entire episode has raised some interesting questions. The powers to arrest lie in the bosom of the police and certain other agencies, like CANU. I am not aware of any non-governmental organizations that have been given the powers to do so. I am not sure the law allows it.
Any excursions into the mining communities, especially in light of the many illegal activities being reported, would surely have to involve some thinking that includes security.
Surely if the organization led by Ms Broomes had been entering mining areas, it would take the necessary precaution like having the police and security personnel present.
I am very much aware the mining areas fall under the purview of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission.
Surely the accusation could have been avoided had Ms Broomes taken the necessary steps to ensure her security and that she is operating in the ambit of the law.
Further, it must be pointed out that while at times we feel frustrated at the pace of how the bureaucracy works, for the good of the country, we cannot take matters into our own hands.
Ms. Broomes’ organization is a good move forward. It should be open to other players who are interested in helping but we first have to enquire whether the entire operations of the women miners association may have been legal from the first instance. How were officers elected? Does the body possess a constitution? What are its mandates? Is it registered? How does the Guyana Constitution accommodate or treat organizations like the Guyana Women Miners Organisation?
I would love to hear from the organization or Ms. Broomes.
