President and Secretary of the Guyana Olympic Association, K. A Juman Yassin and Hector Edwards along with Chef-de-Mission (Dr. Karen Pilgrim) of the Guyana contingent to the inaugural South American Youth Games yesterday met with the athletes, coaches and parents to brief them on what is expected of them as members of the team for the Games in Lima, Peru.
The Guyana contingentwhich will participate in seven (7) disciplines and numbering 30, will leave these shores on September 17 for Peru.
President Yassin guided the attendees through the document and ensured that all present understood the requirements and what is expected of them as ambassadors of their country. The presence of the parents was a welcome initiative so that they too will understand the nature of the activity and what was required.
They were told that no association/federation or athletes was required to pay any monies, all expenses would be undertaken by the GOA and the organizers of the event. Each athlete and official will receive a stipend while in Peru.
At these inaugural games there will be some 213 events (Men’s 109; Women’s 91; Mixed 13) with fourteen countries participating including Guyana. The others are Argentina, Aruba, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Columbia, Ecuador, Panama, Paraguay, Suriname, Uruguay, Venezuela and hosts, Peru.
The Guyanese athletes will be seeking glory in Athletics, Badminton, Boxing, Cycling, Swimming, Table Tennis and Weightlifting.
Also present at yesterday’s briefing were the heads of the various associations/federations whose athletes will fly the Golden Arrowhead.
The South-American Youth Games is part of the South American Sports Organisation (ODESUR) strategic planning, and seeks the development of sports throughout the region. The initiative is aligned to the Youth Olympic Games and follows the same schedule of sports, age range and philosophy towards the strengthening of sport practice and the encouragement of culture and the promotion of ethics and education of the youth.
