Most of the top names in local motor racing are expected to take to the starting grid this Sunday when the Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club (GMR&SC) stages the second leg of its ‘Race of Champions’ Meet, at the South Dakota Circuit.
Among the top competitors listed to compete is Group 4 driver Kevin Jeffrey, who spoke with Kaieteur Sport about his chances of upstaging his rivals on Sunday.
“Even though I haven ‘t had an opportunity to get in much seat time, I’m feeling upbeat about my chances, especially following my performance during the first leg of the Caribbean Series in Jamaica where I was able to secure points against the likes of Jamaican David Summerbell Jnr and the Maloney clan of Barbados,” Jeffrey said.
Jeffrey, who narrowly missed out on winning the individual championship for the CMRC in 2010, the same year he was voted local champion, revealed that despite not being fully satisfied with the performance of his Mitsibushi Evolution VIII machine which has been a bit inconsistent in terms of reliability, he still has to recognise the splendid work that his team of mechanics have done over the years to give it a competitive edge.
“Those guys have done a wonderful job over the years and I want to thank them personally for the hard work and the hours that they’ve put in to prepare the car for every race Meet,” Jeffrey noted.
Among the names mentioned were John Seabra, Leon Persaud, Ramesh Basdeo, Brian Ten-Pow, Rajiv Rajaram and Omar Crespo, who according to him has been together for some time and who collectively possesses a wealth of experience.
Asked to identify some of the competitors who he will have to keep a keen eye on, the local speedster mentioned Mark Vieira, Andrew King and Irfaan Kalamadeen as being among those who will be eager to deny him the chequered flag.
Additionally, Jeffrey said that he will be using the event to fine tune his preparations for the upcoming final leg of the CMRC which will be held later this year right here in Guyana.
He extended thanks to the following sponsors for their kind support and they are: Infab, Automotive Art, Naipaul Auto Works, Shivo Auto Body and Doodan.
Meanwhile, 22 races are carded for the day in all the different categories and competitors are expected to take the Lap of Honour at 08:30 hrs, while competition starts from 09:00 hrs.
It promises to be a day of thrills and skills and fans are being urged to make it to Guyana’s premier circuit racing facility to see some of the best exponents of the sport battle each other for supremacy.
Competitors are also expected from USA, Canada, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago.
