The Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners’ Association (GGDMA) has come out in support of Simona Broomes, President of Guyana Women Miners’ Organization (GWMO) and demands that the police investigate the assault and theft allegations against her professionally.
President of GGDMA, Patrick Harding, who has been observing exchanges in the media from different sections of society, yesterday weighed in on the matter which has Broomes’s character at stake.
Two Mondays ago, Broomes, who has been rescuing women and children from the sex trade, in Guyana’s interior, was detained at police headquarters in relation to assault and robbery allegations leveled by a businesswoman who had been charged with human trafficking.
Broomes was released on $10,000 bail and is expected to return to Eve Leary today.
According to Harding, GGDMA believes that Broomes is innocent of the assault and theft allegations. He said Broomes and the GWMO have been doing a tremendous job in rescuing TIP victims, especially women and children, from mining areas. He said there are presently elements who conduct illegal activities, such as TIP and child labour, as well as illegal mining, and Broomes has been very vocal against them.
He added that during a recent meeting with the Commissioner of Police, Leroy Brumell, a promise was made to GGDMA members that all efforts would be made to ensure ranks of the Guyana Police Force execute their duties professionally. However, miners are also expected to conduct themselves as law-abiding citizens.
Harding also referred to interactions with President Donald Ramotar at the opening of Mining Week, where Ramotar sent a strong message that Government does not condone human trafficking. And GGDMA is prepared to support the President’s call to rid the sector of bad elements.
On a relatively different note, Harding said that GGDMA is working towards having another record-breaking year. He is proud that thus far 320,000 ounces of gold have been declared, as the small and medium scale miners are well on their way of achieving their target.
