Family members, friends and other colleagues gathered at the Sandy’s Funeral Home, Chapel Street Lodge, to pay their final respects to former national footballer, Albert Barton who passed away last week Monday, some 81 years after his birth.
Fondly known as ‘T Barts,’ a nickname plastered on him by his former football colleagues, Barton represented Guyana in the late 50s and early 60s and played for the YWCA, Victoria FC and Juicee FC and
represented Guyana in several international matches. Shortly after hanging up his boots, Barton operated as a stevedore on the John Fernandes Wharf before migrating to Canada.
Family members said that he became ill in that North American country and was hospitalized for sometime before he was discharged and opted to return to Guyana in June to spend the latter part of his life with his children and grandchildren.
Family members also said that the elderly footballer became stricken once more and was under the doctor’s care when he passed away.
Over at the Sandy’s Funeral Home yesterday afternoon, the late footballer’s wife, Yvonne, said that she will sorely miss her husband. She said that she had supported him throughout his football career and he had really loved the sport.
‘T Barts’ was the father of 13 children but one boy and a girl had predeceased him. He also had 30 grandchildren. Following the funeral service Barton was laid to rest at the Le Repentir Cemetery.
