National player Steven Jacobs led from the front with a 61-ball 55 yesterday at Bourda to spur his team to a four-wicket win against Leon Johnson’s X1 as action in the first of two trial matches to pick the Demerara senior cricket team to participate in the El Dorado Cricket competition was played.
Jacobs, who turns 25 on the September 13, smashed three fours and two sixes for his team which reached 131-6 in 31 overs replying to
the 130-9 from their allotted 32 overs in a match reduced from 50 overs due to morning showers.
Jacobs added 46 with Jamal Hinckson, who made 21 from 41 balls with just a solitary boundary, for the third wicket on a slow track and heavy outfield. Left-hander Arvin Seepersaud with 17 from 28 balls also chipped in as Skipper Johnson captured 3-30 from six overs.
Earlier, Shemroy Barrington top-scored with 38 but he took 67 balls and reached the boundary just twice in a second wicket partnership worth 36 with Jeetendra Sookdeo who labored for 14 from 31 balls after the pair joined forces at 17-1 when Tagenarine (10) was removed by Kelon Carmichael.
First-Class off-spinner Zaheer Mohamed took 2-22 from five overs and Leg-spinner Amir Khan supported with 2-32 from six overs. The second game is slated for today at the same venue from 09:30hrs. Chris Barnwell’s team will come up against Jacob’s X1. (S. Devers)
