Batsmen did not apply themselves in Regional U-19 tourneys – coach Amsterdam

Coach of the Guyana team which took part in the recently concluded Regional Under-19 3-day and 50-overs tournaments, Adrian Amsterdam, told Kaieteur Sport yesterday that the lack of application by the batsmen caused Guyana both tournaments.
Amsterdam, said he expected a lot more from the batsmen. “Our batting was below par, we were in a situation to win all of our games but the batsmen threw their wickets away. This was our strength, but it did not come on as expected”, he added.
Amsterdam however credited Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Askhay Homraj and Romario Shepherd for their efforts. “Chanderpaul held the batting together, Homraj played some important knocks, both of them got centuries, Shepherd was excellent with both bat and ball, these are players we can look forward to in the future”, stated Amsterdam.
“Most of our young batsmen play too many Twenty20 games and as a result they find it hard to focus for longer periods. They tried to play too many shots early in their innings and that were their downfall”.
When quizzed about the team’s bowling, Amsterdam informed that he was pleased with the bowlers. “We managed to restrict the opposition, apart from Jamaica no other team managed over 200 runs against us. Gudakesh Motie Kanhai took the most wickets in the three day format”, Amsterdam lamented.
Guyana won two three day matches and drew one which was against Jamaica where they got first innings points and triumphed in three games in the 50-overs.
They ended in the third and fourth positions in the 3-day and 50-overs respectively and Amsterdam said that teams should be selected early to give the players much time to prepare.  (Zaheer Mohamed)
