Trinity Grid Holdings (TGH) Pacesetters Basketball Club yesterday officially launched the Inter-Ward Basketball Championships with support from Ansa McAl under its Mackeson brand where some 12 teams are expected to bounce into action from this weekend.
Chairman of TGH Pacesetters, Dennis Clarke stated, among other reasons, that his club is aiming to raise funds for an exchange programme against Suriname’s Yellowbirds. He had told Kaieteur Sport that a lighting upgrade for Burnham Court are also among the reasons for bringing back an enduring competition on the local basketball calendar.
“The Inter-Ward is back under the auspices of Ansa McAl, who
has been with us from the very beginning. I know Guyana knows what the Inter-Ward is all about and as such I’m expecting the full support of the competing communities,” Clarke told the media.
The long-standing TGH Pacesetters Chairman said that the tournament will be played under the FIBA (International Basketball Federation) rules and there will be a high standard of basketball. He said that security and secured parking will also be in place at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, which will host the competition from Saturday night.
Jump-ball is 8pm and McDoom/Diamond will have the honour of reviving the rivalries against Kitty/Campbellville; the last Inter-Ward Champions from 2010, Albouystown/Charlestown will then play Lodge/Meadowbrook in the feature game Saturday night.
Mackeson Brand Coordinator, Jamaal Douglas, during a brief address indicated that Mackeson is pleased to be a part of the tournament, as it is geared toward engaging the communities; Douglas said that he anticipates a very successful competition.
“We will be using the ‘Smooth Moves’ platform and as you know we have been involved in lots of community based sports like the ‘Keep Your Five Alive’ Football etc. this is one such events,” Douglas said, adding that he will be looking to make the tournament bigger.
The competing wards are defending champion Albouystown/Charlestown, Wortmanville/Werk-en-Rust, North/South Ruimveldt, Mc Doom/Diamond, Alberttown/Bourda, Kitty/Campbellville, Plaisance/Vryheid Lust, Melanie, Buxton, Lodge/Meadowbrook, East/West Ruimveldt and Tucville/Guyhoc.
Two games will be played on competition nights with the final being played in the best-of-three format. The top finishers from each group will advance to the quarterfinal round. Each ward will be allowed two guest players from Linden, Berbice or any foreign player.
The victorious side will receive $250,000, a trophy and replicas while the runners-up will collect $125,000, a trophy and replicas. The third and fourth place finishers pocket $75,000 and $50,000 respectively.
