President of one of Guyana’s oldest road safety bodies, the Enterprise Road Safety Association, is appealing to minibus drivers not to leave school children stranded on the roads before or after classes.
Chandrapaul Persaud, himself a taxi driver, has seen the suffering of schoolchildren who are left on the road hours after classes commence and end, as a result of some bus operators, who blatantly refuse to pick them up.
Persaud was speaking last Sunday on the eve of the reopening of school, even as he and other members of his association repainted the pedestrian crossing outside the Enterprise Primary School on the East Coast of Demerara.
According to Persaud, with the situation as it is, it would be useful for the government to vigorously pursue the re-introduction of “big buses” to cater specifically for schoolchildren.
“ Sometimes the children will be on the road in Georgetown until seven o’clock in the night, still stranded for transportation. I think if the government brings in the school bus for the children, they will be very happy to use it. And it will be much safer for the schoolchildren,” Persaud stated.
This year marks the seventh year that the Enterprise Road Safety Association has been repainting the road signs and pedestrian crossings on a major section of the East Coast Demerara roads.
And every year Persaud takes the opportunity to appeal to road users to exercise care, courtesy, caution, commonsense and consideration, especially when approaching school zones.
“Now that schools have been reopened, I am calling on all the drivers to be extra careful on the road, and the pedestrians too, they must also be careful. We also want the lawlessness, with regards to the drinking and driving to stop,” he said, adding that his association wants to see fatal accidents stamped out.
He also appealed to other organizations to come out with similar initiatives like the one his association is involved in, so that the roads can be safer.
“As the President of the Enterprise Road Safety Association, I am calling on all the traffic police to be very vigilant on the road to make sure that the roads are safer,” Persaud said.
His association, in collaboration with the police, also plans to visit schools on the East Coast of Demerara with the aim of resuscitating Road Safety Patrols at the various learning institutions.
