Organisers of the recently held Seventh Guyana Cup Horserace event, which was successfully held on Sunday 25th August 2013 at the Port Mourant Turf Club, has set about to clear the air and make the record straight in relation to the non-participation of leading racehorse Score’s Even of the Dennis De Roop Simple Royal Stable.
Score’s Even, the only A class horse in Guyana, is definitely one of the top horses in the country at the moment. However the animal did not compete in the recently held Guyana Cup activity.
Controversy had erupted as to why the animal did not participate with a few letters appearing in the press with various reasons being stated including that the organisers did not want the horse to run.
The organisers including the Port Mourant Turf Club have come out emphatically to debunk such claims. When the Guyana Cup was planned and almost finalized there were no A class animals in Guyana. The highest class being Score’s Even at B1. Thus races were set for class B and lower going downwards.
A number of entries including Score’s Even were received for the B and Lower event which was touted as the feature event on the day. Subsequently, Score’s Even won an event a few weeks before the Guyana Cup, thus taking it to ‘A’ class status and immediately ruling it out of participating in the feature B class feature event at the Guyana Cup.
The owner made inquiries as to the position with his horse being an ‘A’ class animal and there is no A class event. The Guyana Horse Racing Authority got involved and discussions were held between the relevant parties including other horse owners. Other owners decided that it was too late to change the class of the race from B to A; since they had prepared their animals, structuring their training programme for a B class event.
They subsequently decided that if Score’s Even is to participate it must carry a top weight to make up for its advantage. However there were some disagreements.
The Executives of the Port Mourant Turf Club (PMTC) subsequently held a meeting and decided that the horse being Guyana’s top animal must be able to run.
They decided that they will make an ‘A’ class race to facilitate Score’s Even. On August 15, 2013 Mr. DeRoop paid $100,000 to enter his ‘A’ class horse – Scores Even. On August 23, Mr. DeRoop contacted the Secretary of the PMTC, Mr. Chattergoon Ramnauth to cancel his entry and requested a refund of his entry fees.
On August 24, Mr. DeRoop again made contact with Secretary Ramnauth and collected his entries. He did not give any reason for withdrawing his horse from the event.
One of the stipulations for the A class race is that there must be five or more horses entered before the event could start. Contrary to what is being stated, a number of horses had entered to compete in the A class event which was more that the stipulated amount.
Those entered by the August 19 event were: Score’s Even, Prince Charming, Ellie’s Vision, Settle in Seattle, Double my Fortune, Zee Bomb, The Message, California strike, Force Entry, Swing Easy, Blame the Jockey and Who is on the Case.
Most of the horses entered in the A class race were also entered for the B class event, which is a normal feature; an animal entering more than one event. At no time did the organisers inform Dennis DeRoop that the race was cancelled.
With the withdrawal of Score’s Event from the A class race and there being no A class horse running, the event was reclassified as a D class race with the same distance and winnings.
The organisers regret that the connection (Owner/Handler) of Score’s Even chose not to allow the animal to participate in the day’s event when every effort was made to facilitate its participation thus robbing turfites the opportunity to see Score’s Even in action.
It is hoped that any misconception about the matter has been cleared and that in the future all can be on board and work together for the improvement of horseracing in Guyana.
