Parliament Building’s immediate environment would soon be cordoned off with the aim of shutting out unwanted elements such as vagrants, garbage and vehicles that destroy the parapets.
According to Raphael Trotman, Speaker of the National Assembly, the barriers would only be opened on days that the National Assembly is in session.
Trotman said that currently works are being done to improve the parapets that vehicles would have destroyed over the years. This initiative is one of the many modifications that are being done to improve the Parliament Building in time for October, when recess period will end, he added.
Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Roger Luncheon, during his recent post-Cabinet press briefing, enlightened that Government gave its no-objection for the award of the contract for the rehabilitation of Parliament Building’s roof to the tune of $31.7M.
According to Trotman, the structure’s roof has been in a poor condition for some time and is actually the most critical area that needs rehabilitating. He said the works are being carried out by the Ministry of Public Works.
He advised that the existing communal washroom would be modified and designated only for the use by Members of Parliament. Meanwhile, a section of the building would be extended to accommodate a washroom for members of the public.
Trotman mentioned that changes inside the Chamber include new furnishings for Parliamentarians, media operatives, and members of the public; and a new air conditioning unit. He said during the last sitting of parliament, he was forced to have the windows opened because the air conditioning unit was malfunctioning.
Trotman emphasized that these works are being done simultaneously and already the air conditioning unit has been purchased and models for the new furnishings and the plans for the washrooms have been reviewed.
