Football action returns to the Georgetown Football Club ground this evening and fans are gearing up for two potentially pulsating encounters that will determine the final matches in the inaugural Slingerz Football Club/National Association of Women’s Football Goal for Gold football championships.
The lasses from Berbice will take on their Georgetown counterparts at 18:30hrs while the Slingerz FC will play BK Western Tigers in the feature attraction starting at 20:00hrs. The winners of the women’s encounter will go on to play Bartica in the finals scheduled for Sunday September 1 while the winner of the men’s encounter will oppose Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United to determine the champions in the two categories.
Western Tigers has had a successful run so far in the tournament after defeating Seawall (2-1) and Pele via penalty kicks (4-3). Coach, Calvin Alleyne is confident that he has the firepower to tackle the West Coast team and enter the finals against Alpha.
“The Western Tigers will be coming out with full force with such strikers as Gavin Wilson, Hubert Pedro and Dominique Garnett, all capable players,” exhorted Alleyne. He said that he has sifted out the most competent players from among his squad and would be coming at Slingerz with venom. As such, fans could expect their stars to come out fighting. Dereck Carter, arguably among the best between the uprights will be expected to thwart the opposition’s chances while Stellon David, Randolph Wagner and Captain, Phillip Rowley will shore up the midfield area.
The defence cordon will be manned by the likes of Soloman Austin, Ryan Adolph and Trevon Lythcott and Mr. Alleyne is confident that once his team plays according to plan they could ease past Slingerz and into the finals.
Charles ‘Lily’ Pollard is the Coach of the Singerz team and his expert tutelage has seen his men defeating Netrockers (4-0) and Topp XX (4-1). He is casually optimistic of carting off the spoils but he is very much aware of the opposition’s strengths. “I am expecting a tough game; the Tigers are good players and would be nurturing similar ambitions to win as we are, so I will not discard them but will come out fighting with our eyes set on victory,” said Mr. Pollard.
He admits that Carter is a competent goalie but said that he has great confidence in his keeper, 16 years old Simon Emmanuel. “He has great potential and I expect great things from him,” said Pollard. Apart from his ‘keeper,’ Pollard will be fielding a competent team the likes of Colin Nelson, Joshua Browne, Shavane Seaforth and Kester Jacobs in the defence cordon. The midfield area will see such players as Tichard Joseph, Vurlon Mills, Clive Nobrega and Captain Dwayne Jacobs while the dependable Devon Millington and Jason McAuley will comprise the strike force.
It is now crunch time and both coaches are spouting confidence. Who will cart off the spoils? Indeed that is the two million dollars question, the very amount the top team will take home. Tonight’s encounter should give football pundits a hint of who could possibly win the prize. For now both teams will be going after each other to ensure that they are in contention against Alpha on Sunday night.
