Firefighters from the GuySuCo Enmore Estate Fire Fighting Unit on Monday responded in time to rescue a toddler from a house in the Senior Management Compound.
While police have no knowledge of the incident and GuySuCo officials were tightlipped, Kaieteur News understands that the child was alone at home when the fire occurred at around 14:15 hours.
Fortunately the interior of the house was only slightly damaged.
This publication was told that the house is occupied by a manager of the estate and his wife along with the toddler. Reliable sources have informed that the child is usually chained to a bed whenever the couple leaves the house.
An operative of the estate’s fire fighting unit told this newspaper that when they arrived at the house, his colleagues were the first to enter and they found the child sitting in a room where the fire had started.
The man said that when he eventually entered the house he saw a chain with padlock attached to a bed.
He stated that while he could not say for sure if the toddler was chained to the bed, the sight of the chain almost convinced him about the rumours he was hearing.
This newspaper learnt that the matter is being investigated internally by the GuySuCo Management, with a view to ascertaining the cause of the fire and why was the toddler left alone at home.
