Alpha and Bartica through to finals; wait for respective opponents
Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United defeated Camptown FC 3 nil and booked a place in the final when those two teams clashed in the Slingerz Football Club/National Association of Women’s Football, Goal for Gold football championships at the GFC Ground, Sunday evening last. This was just after the women’s encounter where Bartica trounced West Demerara 4-0 to also advance to the final in that category.
Alpha’s goals came off the boot of Dwight Peters (45th), Anthony Abrams (49th) and Andrew Murray, who netted in the 3rd minute of added on time (90+3). The winning team will now await the results of the match between Slingerz and BK Western Tigers tomorrow evening to determine their adversary in the final.
Meanwhile, the organizers have intimated that they are working in tandem with the executive of the National Association of Women’s Football (NAWF) to promote the sport in that sector and the women turned in a commendable performance to aid the efforts of their executives.
The three scorers that sent the Bartica team through L-R O’Selmo, Thomas and Ambrose will hope to replicate the feat in the finals.
The women from the hinterland community made their intentions clear from as early as the 6th minute when Olivia O’Selmo stitched in their first goal. The persistent striker struck again in the 30th minute to send her team into the half with a 2 nil lead.
The intense battle continued upon resumption but it was clear that the Barticians were better prepared. Kerry Thomas (51st) pushed the match further away from the West Demerara team and Candida Ambrose sealed the deal with a stinger in the 58th minute. The Barticians will tackle the winners in the Georgetown/Berbice encounter scheduled for tomorrow evening at the GFC Ground.
The top women’s team will receive $200,000 with the second place team carrying home half that amount. The third and fourth place finishers will win $50,000 and $25,000 respectively. The men will win two million dollars, while the runners up win half that amount. The 3rd and 4th place finishers receive $500,000 and $300,000 respectively. The tournament has benefited from the largesse of Ansa McAl, Star Party Rental and Eton Cordis of Money Gram, Alexander Street, Kitty.
