Under-18 (SUB JUNIOR) Pan American Gold Medalist Powerlifter, Gumendra Shewdas, will be taking to the World stage today at the World Championships in Killeen, Texas, USA.
Installed as the favorite with a total of 497.5KGS against nearest challenger Dalton La Coe of the USA at 455.0kgs and several others, Gumendra stands on the brink of local sports history should he hold his nerves as well as any late challenges to become the Nation’s first ever junior World Champion in any of the established World sports played in Guyana.
He is currently the National, Caribbean as well as Commonwealth record holder in the Squat (197.5kg), deadlift (207.5kg) and total (497.5kg).

Gumendra competes in the 53kg sub junior category (U/18) and is coached by Mr. Egbert Jackson of Total Fitness Gym Corriverton, the driving force behind the success of National Juniors Suraj Shewdas, 2013 Pan American Bronze medalists Fabian Ketwaroo (66.0kg) and Anis Ade Thomas (83.0kg), whom are also members of his gym.
He is being accompanied by Mr. Denroy Livan the Federation’s PRO and Organising Secretary who will be functioning in the dual capacity of Manager/Coach.
The Executive and General Membership, loyal sponsors, Government of Guyana (thru the Ministry of Sport as well as the National Sports Commission) have all invested towards ensuring that this moment could arrive. All Guyana wishes Gumendra Good luck and success in his endeavours.
