Guyana’s Afruica Gentle crushed Vincentian Amarlia Benn 6-1, 6-1 to capture the final of the ITF Under-14 title on Wednesday, at the Grass Roots Tennis Center in Kingstown, St Vincent and the Grenadines late yesterday afternoon.
According to a release, the top ranked junior player was in impeccable form as she wore the second seeded Vincentian down with powerful groundstrokes to all corners of the courts.
The talented Gentle’s relentless pressure and stinging returns proved too much for the dejected and fatigued Benn, who seemed to have surrendered very early and looked resigned to her fate as runner-up.
Gentle’s victory is the second time that a Guyanese has won the title on the island and she now joins Aretta Dey, who was the first to walk away victorious.
Also in winners’ row was doubles partner Jamaali Homer who outplayed St Vincent’s Anastasia White in straight sets 4-1, 4-1 in warm breezy conditions to progress to the Girls 14’s Consolation finals.
Meanwhile, Jordan Beaton found the going tough on day 3 in his semi- finals encounter, as he was bounced from the tournament in straight sets 4-1, 4-0 by Vincentian Richard Hoyte.
Hoyte the second ranked player will now compete against top seed Danyel Angus out of Trinidad and Tobago in the final. Angus defeated Antiguan Justin Marcano 4-0, 4-2.
In the boys 14 doubles, the Guyanese pair of Jordan Beaton and Keshon Reece were comprehensively beaten 6-0, 6-2 by Adriel Bousquet and Jean Philippe Murray.
The Girls on the other hand remained on course to capture a second title when the duo of Afruica Gentle and Jamaali Homer gained a walkover from Trinidadians Candace Cook and Anya King. The Guyanese pair will now contest the final against the winners of the other semi-final between Amarlia and Gabrielle Benn and Anastasia White and Alexi Humphrey in an all St Vincent and the Grenadines affair.
