A Hadfield Street woman is recovering at the Georgetown Hospital from a heart attack she suffered after she was sent to prison for a week for contempt of court.
The woman, whose name was not disclosed by hospital officials, reportedly collapsed just before she was taken to prison to serve her sentence, which was imposed by a city Magistrate yesterday.
According to reports, during the hearing of a matter the woman got up and proceeded to hurl insults at the magistrate. She continued despite being warned by the Prosecutor and was promptly cited for contempt. For her troubles she was given seven days to cool off in prison.
According to one of the woman’s relatives, just as police were about to transport her to prison, she complained about feeling unwell.
She was rushed to the hospital where it was discovered that she had suffered a heart attack.
Kaieteur News understands that the woman is diabetic and also hypertensive.
Because she was sentenced to prison time, the woman is presently under police guard at the hospital.
