A post mortem is scheduled to be performed today on the body of 22-year-old miner Keith Wallerson of Golden Grove. He is expected to be buried on Friday.
The man had disappeared in the Cuyuni River on Saturday morning and his body was recovered later that day. The body reportedly bore no marks of violence, but the family wants answers, as information at the moment is sketchy.
According to a police press release, at about 0800hrs on Saturday August 17, 2013, the police at Aranka received a report that earlier that day, Wallerson was crossing the Cuyuni River in a boat, when the vessel capsized and he was feared drowned.
A search party that included police ranks subsequently found the body in the Cuyuni River at about 13:00h on Saturday.
Speaking to his mother Hazel James, the woman said her son left in February with his older brother, Troy, to go into the interior to do mining. They went to the Aranka area.
The woman stated that Keith was the fourth of her six children and had attended Rosignol Secondary. Her son, she said, never stayed away from home that long, He called regularly and had promised to return home for the Annual Soiree celebration in neighbouring Hopetown, West Coast Berbice, but did not come or call. She did not hear from him again.
Ms. James said that she cannot say much about what happened, but the family received a call on Saturday morning informing them that Keith was missing. She said that a few minutes after they received another call informing them that his body had been found. The circumstances, she said, were unclear.
