Dear Editor,
I read in the Sunday Edition of Kaieteur News dated August 18th 2013 from the Ministry of Tourism Permanent Secretary Mr. / Mrs. W. Hamilton to ignore any fare increase circulation.
I wish to make it clear that communities on their way to the East Coast of Demerara as far as Ann’s Grove were made to pay $200 to get to their destination in the Golden Grove – Victoria Villages and were also forced the fares upfront before boarding the buses.
These minibus operators can’t just wake up one day and charge commuters beyond our required fare which is $120. The government needs to sanction heavy on them just as they have imposed the forty (40) hour work week on employers.
Minibus operators each day commuters are faced with the harassment especially those living in out of town areas. I have one call for the Government and I am sure that commuters would be in support of the return for the big buses without the transport big buses mini bus operators will not stop the advantage on commuters.
Some persons refused to pay the $200 while others were short of the fare and some paid because it was raining heavily and they wanted to get home. I sat for awhile and I observe the proceedings on my way down from Golden Grove to the city park.
My daughter was forced to pay the $200 because she had to get home to her two small children. How inhumane persons can be instead of assisting persons in getting to their destinations, they choose to rob them by over charging $80 more.
