Adequate and improved accommodation will soon be in place for contracted Government workers in Mahdia, Region Eight.
According to Regional Executive Officer (REO) Ronald Harsawack, “brand new and fully refurbished accommodation suites will be available to the next influx of Government workers within the health and education sectors.”
Harsawack revealed that four new living quarters are being constructed for teachers, in addition to renovation of several other housing quarters.
“We are building two new nurses’ quarters near the Hospital at Mahdia and rehabilitating two others. We are also working to install electricity to all of the teachers’ quarters … All of these works come under the expenditure of the current budget.
Earlier this year, Regional Democratic Councilor Neim Mohammed Gafoor described the circumstances in which contracted Region Eight health workers were housed as ‘unlivable.’
Gafoor requested suitable redress, citing neglect by the Region’s Administration.
He highlighted the living quarters of one nurse and her family, where broken windows and wrecked furniture were evident.
“One family lives in a little apartment within the health compound, a husband and wife and their offspring. They are forced to live in quarters, near the mortuary and generator room, which is unhealthy and uncomfortable for a couple who have a baby. The sink is broken down; the electrical wiring is bad, no potable water, or proper door is available at the apartment.”
“In spite of the recent development, several regional concerns are still being ignored, owing to a rift between the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) and REO. It is the RDC that is responsible for works and recommendation of such, within the region, while the Executive Office is responsible for financing these projects. So this rift causes the Region to suffer.”
Kaieteur News was also told that the General Health Facility would suffer problems with storage of medical supplies from time to time.
“The Hospital is short of a lot of things every now and then, but the dental department especially, is short of things to clean your teeth, to do filling and so on.”
To ensure that adequate and appropriate health care is made available to all Guyanese, regardless of geographic location, the Government had embarked on offering scholarships to qualified hinterland students, who desired to pursue such studies.
Since training and capacity building is important in the delivery of quality health care services, upon completion of the programme, students return to their respective communities and become heads of the facilities there, thereby offering expertise to their people.
However in some cases, trained personnel are deployed to key areas of the Hinterland, to ensure that a complete package of health care services are delivered as well as specialized skills offered. (Rehanna Ramsay)
