Dear Editor,
We write to correct the misapprehension that may have been created by the recommendation in GAWL’s statement condemning the recent spate of domestic violence incidents that ‘a safe house be established forthwith so that women who make the decision to leave their homes will have alternative accommodation for themselves and their children until the law can take its course’.
There is such a safe house, namely Help & Shelter’s shelter, which can be accessed through our crisis service at Homestretch Avenue, Durban Park, Georgetown. Our phone numbers are 592-227-3454 and 225-4731.
The shelter not only provides a place of safety for abused women and their children, but counselling, empowerment and, when appropriate, skills training.
