Guyana’s No.1 player Sudesh Fitzgerald had to call on all his experience to repel a spirited performance from his apprentice Nicholas Seetaram to win the recently staged competition which was organised by the Guyana Darts Association (GDA) and played, at the Malteenoes Sport Club.
Fitzgerald, who coaches Seetaram eventually won by 3 games to 1, but had to resist a second leg charge from Seetaram to cart off the top prize.
Playing in the preliminary round of the Open Singles Seetaram defeated Anthony Bissoondyal 2/1, then went on to engage Anil Lachman in the semi finals after the latter had dominated F. Correia 2/0.
The two combatants treated the fans to an exciting match and sahred the opening two games, before Lachman committed a mistake in the decider when he miscalculated the double and that allowed Seetaram back into the rubber and he avoided any slip-ups as he finished competently to set up the final showdown against his mentor Fitzgerald.
Fitzgerald’s march to the final included a first round defeat of Colin France by a 2/0 margin, before he was made to fight in his semi final clash with Rambarose, prevailing 2/1.
In the final, Seetaram surprisingly was able to level the contest after captuing the second stanza, but that was a s far as he was allowed to get as the consistent Fitzgerald checked out with double 4 leaving Seetaram at 172 points.
And in the fourth leg, Fitzgerald took the game finishing with double 20, leaving Seetaram with 145.
In the Luck of the Draw Doubles – Fitzgerald and Edward Richmond teamed up against Lachman and Anthony Bissoondyal in the semi final and they won 2/1 to set up a showdown with Rambarose and Francis Correia in the final.
They had defeated the pair of Shaundel Hyles and Ricardo Madhoo in the other semi final. Rambarose and F. Correia came out champions, winning 2/1 in the final.
